Hitomi-chan is Shy With Strangers so far has started as a solid entry into the rom com manga genre. It's a pretty straight forward set up that's pretty cliched. Hitomi is the new kid in school, she is very athletic, has very little people skills and tends to glare. Her first person she meets is Yuu who happens to go to the same school and after some misunderstanding the two become fast friends with some romantic undertones. What follows are a lot misunderstandings as people think Hitomi is going to be scary but she turns out to be nice. Mix in standard high school antics, underlying romantic attractions where neither have s clue how to bring it up, a dash of fan service , and you have the series in a nutshell.
It all sounds very standard and it is. But it is also incredibly sweet. Yuu and Hitomi are among the most wholesome protagonist I've seen in awhile. Add in a pleasant art style, that has a slight unique glare about its faces and you get a very good laid back rom-com. I don't know if it'll be this sweet and entertaining for long. But for a new series in a crowded genre it's a very good entry that doesn't stray of the beaten path. -MickManga
